Cozy places mitigate the effects of climate change

Extreme weather events can cause major damage. We have seen the negative consequences of heavy rainfall and hot summers in recent months. That's why we at BBG are now increasingly focusing on climate resilience, mitigating the effects of climate change and strategic climate risk prevention. To this end, it makes sense to gradually redesign our outdoor facilities.

"For example, we are planning climate islands: infiltration options combined with shady seating areas and the opportunity to plant your own beds," says Jan Oldenburger, Interim Managing Director Technology, looking ahead. "Of course, it takes more effort to maintain such a recreational area than simply mowing the lawn. That's why we're hoping for the help of our members and are looking for sponsors for the climate islands."

A sponsorship involves supporting the maintenance and, for example, keeping the seating area tidy or maintaining a raised bed - as a small attraction in the neighborhood. In this way, the community benefits from a beautiful environment and the hot summers become a little more bearable for everyone. "We want to start with three pilot projects in 2025 - initially at Sackring," says Jan Oldenburger. "If there is enough of a response, we will tackle further projects in various districts in the following years."
