The balconies of the Lion City
Every year, the Braunschweiger Baugenossenschaft eG (BBG) joins forces with the Braunschweiger Zeitung newspaper, the city of Braunschweig and Braunschweig Stadtmarketing GmbH to search for the most flowery, the coziest and the greenest balcony in the Lion City. As part of the BBG balcony competition, Braunschweig residents can have their balconies, terraces or gardens judged in three categories. Registration opens on May 15.

An outdoor living room, a colorful flower meadow in miniature or a paradise for bees - depending on their personal interests, owners can design their balconies in very different ways. The BBG rewards creative ideas in its annual BBG balcony competition. "The competition is a project close to our hearts, not only for us, but also for some of the participants, who have been taking part for several years and are always coming up with new ideas for their balconies. We are hoping for the same this year and are looking forward to many new competitors," says Karin Stemmer, BBG Board Member.
In the BBG balcony competition, participants can impress with their balconies, terraces or gardens in three categories. The "Floral Splendour" category is a colorful one: the jury evaluates the color composition as well as the care and condition of the plants on the participating balconies. The "Open Air Living Room" category is more cozy: the jury not only evaluates the plant arrangement, but also the interaction of the decorative elements and the feel-good factor of the balconies, terraces, gardens or other outdoor areas. In the "Bee Happiness" category, the jury will evaluate the balconies, terraces and gardens in terms of the diversity of the planting with a focus on bee-friendliness.
Entries can be submitted from May 15 to August 1 on the BBG website at www.bbg-balkonwettbewerb.de and by email to SimoneLampe@baugenossenschaft.de. To give the jury an overview of the entries, the application should include one or more photos. If this is not possible, BBG employees will photograph the balcony after receiving the application. For entries with balconies, terraces or gardens that are not sufficiently visible to the BBG photographers, it is necessary to send in one or more photos.
Readers of the Braunschweiger Zeitung will determine the winning balconies, terraces or gardens by voting. A jury consisting of employees of BBG, Braunschweiger Zeitung and Stadtmarketing as well as Mayor Annegret Ihbe and plant expert Michael Möller will make the preselection. The top three in each category will receive a voucher from Blumen Möller worth 50, 100 and 150 euros. The BBG will invite the best participants to the final event, which will take place this year as part of Kultur unter Glas on September 8 at Dowesee.
