Sackring: A Neighborhood of the Future A Better Quality of Life for Future Generations

The Sackring district has over 1,200 apartments a true centerpiece of the Braunschweig Building Cooperative

But time doesn't stand still: Today, the neighborhood no longer fully meets many of the requirements of modern living—accessibility, climate protection, and energy efficiency present new challenges.

Side-by-side maps: The current (left) and future (right) floor plans of the district with colored building sections and green spaces.

A New Chapter for the Sackring District

In collaboration with the Institute for Urban Planning and Design Methodology and the City of Braunschweig, the BBG has developed a urban planning concept to prepare the district for the future.

Key aspects of the plan:

Replacing the small-scale, comb-like buildings with continuous development along the Sackring

Creation of park-like, unpaved green spaces to provide shade and promote biodiversity

Climate change preparedness: Adaptation to hot summers and heavy rainfall

Promotion of biodiversity through new habitats

The schedule: Step by Step into the Future

The project will be implemented in stages and with due consideration. First, a zoning plan process will be carried out, which will take some time to complete. Subsequently, initial demolition work could begin, before the goal of completing the entire project is pursued gradually over a longer period—provided the process proceeds largely without a hitch.

Our commitments to members:

At least two years’ notice before any necessary move

Individual housing offers in the neighborhood to enable residents to stay

Creation of publicly subsidized, affordable housing in the new building

The first information sessions for members have already been successfully held. More will follow regularly.
